The mission of the Scientific Research Fund - FNRS is to develop fundamental scientific research within the context of initiatives put forward by the researchers. It encourages the production and development of knowledge by supporting, on the one hand, individual researchers and by financing, on the other hand, research programmes carried out within the laboratories and departments which are mainly located in the Universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
Founded on the single criteria of scientific excellence, the financial support of the F.R.S.-FNRS is applied in accordance with several methods:
- temporary or permanent remuneration for individual researchers
- funding of research teams
- participation in networks and international programmes
- allocation of grants and credits which encourage scientific exchanges
- awarding of scientific prizes
Following PHARE I, the FNRS has adopted a new refinancing plan PHARE II for the period 2015-2019. It proposes an inventory of 20 priority measures and axes in order to respond to the needs of the researchers and take up the challenges facing fundamental research in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (improving the material conditions for carrying out research, attracting talents by increasing its attractiveness, helping our researchers to join international research programmes, increasing activities in strategic domains).
PHARE I was approved by the Board of Directors in March 2009. It envisaged new instruments for the development of research in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, for the benefit of the researchers and the universities where they carry out their activities.
